#Ridgerunner Nation

I hope you all are safe, well and preparing for the many challenges that await us in the new school year. I want to communicate and share with you some adjustments needed for our Ridgerunners Return to Learn Plan and clarify some confusion related to our new bus routes.

With the recent spike in COVID cases, I have adjusted our Return Plan so the district reserves the right to require masks on campus when cases rise. With that being the current situation, we will follow the Oklahoma State Department of Education recommendation of requiring masks or face shields when we are in the Yellow and Orange status. There will be no mask restriction when we are in “Green” and we will transition to Distance Learning if we are “Red.”  By following the OSDE recommendation, all staff will wear masks or shields on campus, and all students in grades 1-12 will wear masks or shields at school. Masks are recommended for Pre-K and K students also, but they can remove masks if they are with their cohort. Today on a Zoom call with our athletic conference directors, it was unanimously agreed upon that masks will be worn by fans as well. A mask will be required to purchase a ticket to enter the contest. I realize this will surely upset some parents and students, however, I have to put the health and safety of our students and staff above the personal beliefs of others.

Another topic of concern has been our recent release of our new bus routes. The CDC has recommended that we reduce the student density on our buses. Our buses routinely have 70+ students on them. We have developed a two wave system to pick up as many students as possible while reducing the number of bus riders at the same time. Our plans calls for pick up and drop off at community stops mostly outside the city limits in the first wave and pick up and drop off inside the city limits in the second wave. The buses will all depart for the community stops furthest out, pick up students after temperature and mask checks and drop the students off at their respective schools. Drivers will sanitize the high contact areas of their bus and head out for the second wave of local community stops. They will again perform temperature and mask checks and bring students to their respective schools. The process is repeated after school. Please locate the nearest community stop to your home. You may choose whichever stop fits your needs. If we use our traditional bus schedule too many students will be packed on the buses. If we run multiple routes door to door, and only allow half capacity, students will have to be picked up too early and dropped off at school with no supervision. This plan asks parents to get their students to a location and we will get them to school.

I hope this email helps clarify any questions or concerns you have as we enter a most unique school year. This school year will be unlike any other school year. I understand the inconvenience, but my goal is to get our kids to school.  If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me or your child’s building principal.

Yours in education,

Pat Dodson-Superintendent
